I just purchased a Johnson 2 hp 2 cyc. Built in 1972 (2R72 ser E3533357. I believe this is water cooled since there are no cooling fins on the engine, but I did not see a discharge stream coming from the engine. Can anyone tell me if this is water cooled and if so, where to look for the discharge stream to be sure it is working?? (Also appears to be an impeller inlet above the prop) Also be interested in how to change the oil in the lower end, and how to adjust the slow/fast rich/lean knobs as well.
Re: Johnson 2 hp air or water cooled? Rich/lean settings? (Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs) (J. Reeves) Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns. Setting the high and low needle valves properly: NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.
(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire).
At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.
(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond.
As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back.
Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting. When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway. Re: Johnson 2 hp air or water cooled? Rich/lean settings?
My 1972 2hp likes a lean setting when running fast and a rich setting when idling. The depth of the foot affects the way the motor runs more than any other motor I have ever used. The exhaust comes out of the back of the motor just above the foot. I feel for the water spitting out of it regularly.
The impeller is easy to replace, just be careful with the o-ring. The lower gear lube has one screw. I turn my motor sideways to empty. To make sure it refills all of the way I clear the hole to allow air bubbles to escape.

Had to be constantly fiddling with the high and low speed adjustments. Even a few degrees of water temperature would be enough for a little tweaking. Like a Piper Cub I guess. Also, that motor was very very easy on gas.

I wore it and a Herters square stern canoe out on Ozarks gravel rivers. Not once did I ever break a shear pin. I went through 3 or 4 props though the years I had it. I'd just grind them down till I had to get a new one but never busted a pin.
