• Hatchet Lesson Plans Novel

This is a unit organized to teach Gary Paulsen's adventure novel Hatchet. I taught this unit to a sixth grade honors class during my Middle School MAT Practicum. Though it does not have a lesson plan per day, there are enough examples of lessons and guided readings to aid your understanding of how this unit would have continued. Within this unit, I used an introduction and development method that included cereal boxes. This method was an inexpensive way to include contemporary media study while also reading and discussing a fictional novel. It was built to help students succeed in excelling Georgia's Common Core Performance Standards. A Note about the Classroom Competition for this Unit: My students were randomly placed in 'survival groups' of three as we all 'crashed' into the novel.

Each student continued to work in their groups, gaining survival tools when the whole group had their novels, notebooks, and homework (Survival Tools: Print out images of items that the students said they could not live without). As the unit continued, the groups gained more tools that were placed in their 'tool boxes' outside the class room.

These tool boxes then created a competition to see which crash crew could gain the most tools by continuing to bring their survival tools to the classroom every day. This group method encouraged student accountability and social development amongst all the students within our classroom. Included in this unit: Lesson Plans, Guided Readings, and Group Project.
