Client An Energy Sector company that is one of the world’s leading suppliers of a wide range of products, solutions and services in the field of energy technology. Presence in over 100 countries and 405,000 permanent employees Summary The electrical department of a major design company have used a cable tray and cabling tool for many years based on Autocad. This tool is easy to use but the design does not integrate with the other disciplines which all use AVEVA PDMS™. The main requirement was to design an electrical application for cable tray design that was as close to the Autocad application as possible.
This meant that it would be easier to train the existing users to create their designs directly in an integrated AVEVA PDMS™ design environment. The main features of the AVEVA PDMS™ Electrical Cable Modelling Tool were to allow the users to layout the cable trays using a single quick main line route and then to automatically route any number of levels of trays, with different specifications. The route also needed to have additional points placed in the line to allow creation of tees, crosses, reducers and terminal bends. The designers do not have to have an extensive knowledge of AVEVA PDMS™ commands and routing methods as these are all provided in the developed routines. There was also a similar feature for routing a matrix of conduits based on a single main line route.

The tool also provides an intelligent support design utility which can place supports individually or along the entire cable tray route. The supports brackets are automatically created based on the levels and widths of the cable trays at the support position. The tool produces XML output to interface to the original Autocad package as the cables are still designed in this package.
